It is my very great pleasure to welcome you to the Australian Studies Centre at Peking University. The Centre was established in 1996 as an interdisciplinary program designed to foster a better understanding of Australia at China’s leading University. My wife Karen and I arrived in Beijing in February 2013 following my appointment as the inaugural BHP Billiton Chair of Australian Studies. The Chair is supported by BHP Billiton and the Foundation for Australian Studies in China (FASIC). It is intended to be an ongoing 2-3 year position. While based at Peking University, the Chair is designed to support the development of Australian Studies Centres and Programs across China. In our first year we have:
- Introduced new courses in Australian Studies;
- Started an intern program for Australian students studying in China;
- Created an annual high-level conference and a student-focused roundtable program.
- Collaborated with the Institute for World Drama and Film at Peking University to produce and stage the Louis Nowra play, Cosi, only the second Australian play produced in China.
