“Australia-China Dialogue”, as one of the series event of Savour Australia, was held at Xihua University, southwest China on 21 November, 2016.
Professor Greg McCarthy, the BHP Billiton Chair of Australian Studies at Peking University, together with Nancy Gordon, the Australian Consulate-General in Chengdu, and Timothy Edward White, Deputy Consul-General, attended this event.
Professor Greg McCarthy emphasized the important role academic communication and exchanges plays in stimulating better understanding of the China and Australia. He further promoted two Australian scholarships including Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships and New Colombo Plan.
The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships mainly attracts talents from Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and the United States to study and research in Australia and Australians to do the same in China. The New Colombo Plan provides opportunities for Australian students to study in China and vice versa.
Professor Greg McCarthy encouraged more Chinese students to apply for these scholarships and Fellowships to undertake study, research or professional development in Australia and promoted academic exchanges and cooperation between the two nations.
Liu Qingyou, president of Xihua University, said the Australian study center at Xihua University would like to play a more active role in promoting research cooperation between China and Australia and encourage more students to study in Australia. To encourage opening up and international cooperation in education is an important part of the 13th Five-Year Plan and the university would pay great attention to it, according to Liu.
The experts and scholars on Australian issues from China and Australia had a dialogue on “Sustainability – Social and Environmental Issues”. They discussed various topics including ecological civilization construction, ecological literature, rural health insurance system and pension system in China and Australia.
Victoria State of Australia and Sichuan Province of China are sister state and province and have a close relationship in the past years. As a key provincial university, Xihua University has actively participated in and hosted many China-Australia cultural and academic communication activities and promoted the relations of the two nations. The officials of Xihua University welcomed more world renowned professors to teach and do research at the university.
