Visit of Dr Agnieszka Sobocinska (Monash University)

In March 2015 the PKU ASC hosted Dr Agnieszka Sobocinska, a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of the National Centre for Australian Studies at Monash University. Her research interests lie in the intersection of popular attitudes and international affairs, with particular focus on Australian relations with Asia and in Australia’s foreign aid system. She has been awarded prizes by the Australian Historical Association, the History Council of New South Wales and the International Australian Studies Association for her research articles. Her publications include Visiting the Neighbours: Australians in Asia (University NSW Press, 2014) and Australia’s Asia: from Yellow Peril to Asian Century (UWA Publishing, 2012), co-edited with Professor David Walker. In 2010 Dr Sobocinska spent several months at the Universitas Udayana in Bali, Indonesia as the recipient of an Endeavour Award Research Fellowship.

During her visit to PKU Dr Sobocinska spent time in discussion with Professor David Walker on his new book, a sequel to Anxious Nation: Australia and the Rise of Asia.  Dr Sobocinska also delivered a lecture on World War One to students in Professor Walker’s Australian History course and attended several events hosted by the Centre.
